Engagement Letters

Engagement letters have long been used by big accounting firms hired to prepare financial statements, but they are now mainstream for many or all services provided by professional firms, both big and small.  I now issue such a letter at the beginning of each engagement to detail the services I will provide, as well as a fee estimate or quote, in addition to your responsibilities for the timely completion or handling of each service.  Both the client(s) and I sign the letter.  Each receives a signed copy.  Generally, the work will not commence until return of a signed letter.  This document offers protection for both the client and the provider in that all parties know what to expect from each other.
